Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars. Most people start to get their wisdom teeth
when they are teenagers, though some teeth don’t come in until you are in your early
twenties.
Wisdom teeth have a purpose. They are another set of molars, but more often than not
they cause more problems than they are worth. Wisdom teeth can come in misaligned,
facing any direction. They can even try to come in horizontally, growing into your other
teeth. This can damage your nerves and even your jawbone.
Most patients return to school or desk work within 3–4 days, with swelling peaking around day two or three and fading over the first week. Full healing of the gum takes a few weeks. To protect the healing sockets and avoid dry socket, follow your instructions closely: no straws, smoking, or vigorous rinsing for at least 72 hours, stick to soft foods, and keep the area clean with gentle salt-water rinses starting 24 hours after surgery.
Wisdom teeth are easiest to remove — and recovery is fastest — in the late teens and early twenties, before the roots fully form and the bone hardens. That's why the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons recommends an evaluation by the late teenage years. Adults of any age can still have wisdom teeth removed safely; the procedure is simply planned with additional care.
